Regulations for the theoretical exam
The theoretical exam is the first mandatory step to obtain a provisional or full driving licence. Its purpose is to verify that the candidate has mastered the rules of the road, safe behaviours on the road, and the basic principles of the Highway Code.
Minimum age
Category B licence (car): 17 years to take the theoretical exam.
Passing the exam is necessary to obtain a provisional licence.
Validity
The certificate of passing the theoretical exam isvalid for 3 years.
If this period is exceeded, the candidate must retake the exam.
Content of the exam
The exam is based on:
The rules of the Highway Code,
Road signs and signals,
Priorities,
Speed limits,
Safe behaviours (alcohol, mobile phones, safe distances...),
Realistic driving situations presented in the form of images or videos.
The test consists of50 multiple choice questions.
Passing
You must obtainat least 41/50to pass the exam.
A candidate who fails can retake the exam, but aftertwo failures, the law requires them to take12 hours of theoretical lessonsat an approved driving school before they can re-register.

To sit the theoretical exam, the candidate must bring:
Theiridentity cardor an official identification document.
Thepaymentof the exam fees (varies by centre).
